Greetings once again from Key Largo. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! The fishing and catching have both been hot, so let’s get right to it.

Capt. Mike Makowski has been on a roll lately. He guided Michael Amelunk and Don Hilton to second place overall team in the BTU Classic out of Ocean Reef last week. They had 11 Redfish releases on artificials, giving them 1150 points. Capt. Mike also guided Adam Dubrewski and Kirk Gammel to some great small Tarpon action on fly last week. They had a real scramble in the both when they connected on a double hook up, landing both fish.

Capt. Todd McLean was out and found a little Snook activity close to home. He found the fish sunning in some shallow water and got them to eat live Pilchards. When the wind blows and the water cools off a good place to look for Snook is on the protected shorelines. They are a lot like us as they don’t like to be out in that nasty weather either.

I also got a report about there being some schools of large Jacks around. I love catching Jacks. They are eating and swimming machines. Just hook a six pounder on eight pound spinning gear and you’ll see why I like them so much. They fight like there’s no tomorrow. Jacks are usually pretty cooperative when it comes to baits. I prefer to catch them on Hank Brown’s Bucktails in the red and white pattern.

There has been a good bite of Trout in the open bays. A Hook Up Jig and Shrimp fished under a Cajun thunder float has been the most popular technique. Just let the wind push you and drift the baits behind the boat. This is a great time of year to get the kids involved in fishing. A good Trout bite will keep them interested for a while.

Until next time, good tides and keep the Sun to your back. ><)))>
